About Our Founder

Late General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, born on 8 November 1938 in Kano, Nigeria, was a prominent figure in Nigerian history. He was a graduate of the prestigious Sandhurst Academy in the UK and enlisted in the Nigerian Army, where he achieved remarkable success and recognition. General Muhammed is celebrated as a legendary visionary, eminent soldier, and great patriot for his dedication to his country and his people.

His legacy extends beyond his professional achievements, as he is also remembered as a beloved husband and father. General Muhammed’s values of discipline, responsibility, and teamwork were evident throughout his life and career.

His contributions to Nigeria and his commitment to bettering the lives of Africans inspired the establishment of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF). Today, the foundation continues to carry forward his ideals and works to improve the quality of life for Africans through various development projects focused on equity, good governance, economic empowerment, and more.

1938 - 1957
Early Years and Education

Murtala Ramat Muhammed is born on November 8, 1938, in Kano, Nigeria. He completes his primary and secondary education in Kano and Zaria.

1958 - 1964
Military Service

Murtala enlists in the Nigerian Army, undergoes training in Ghana and England, and is commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1961. He serves in various roles, including with the UN Peacekeeping Force and in the Nigerian Civil War.

1965 - 1974
Rising Through the Ranks

He rises through the ranks, becoming a Brigadier-General in 1971. He attends the Joint Service Staff College in England and takes on key military and administrative roles in Nigeria.

1975
Taking the Helm

In July, Murtala Muhammed becomes Nigeria's Military Head of State, implementing significant reforms and policies to address corruption and improve governance.

1976
Tragic End

Tragically, on February 13, Murtala Muhammed is assassinated in Lagos.

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation, built on his ideals, works towards national development and social change.
