MMF COMMUNICATIONS UNIT Education Restored Hope to marginalised communities in Northern Nigeria by providing Scholarships to 108 children. Quarterly visits to all scholars across Northern Nigeria, ensuring their progress and witnessing the impact of educational support. Success stories of scholarship beneficiaries like Hamman Hassan, Abdullahi Muhammad and their transformative journeys Success stories of the Chibok Girls in the diaspora and their transformative journeys in partnership with the Victim Support Fund. The distribution of Textbooks to Scholars at Federal Government College, Maiduguri. The graduation ceremony of 28 beneficiaries from diverse institutions, spanning universities, secondary schools, and primary schools, was a significant event celebrating academic excellence, personal development, and potential realisation. Visited and evaluated the academic and physical well-being of the sponsored orphaned children at the Future Prowess School. Launched a new scholarship programme for African girls in STEM, in collaboration with the African Science Academy and facilitated by the African Gifted Foundation. In partnership with Cherie Blair’s Mentoring Women in Business Programme, eight exceptional MMF-nominated candidates joined the May and November 2024 cohorts, with six candidates for May and two for November. These women are embarking on a mentorship journey designed to empower and elevate their businesses. Eight businesses from the November 2023 cohort successfully completed the Women in Business Mentoring Program in November 2024. This transformative year equipped the entrepreneurs with essential tools and insights to drive growth and sustainability in their ventures. A Cherie Blair flagship survey, supported by MMF, gathered critical insights from women entrepreneurs. These findings are instrumental in advocating for meaningful policy changes to address the socioeconomic challenges faced by women in business across Nigeria. MMF commemorated the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with impactful initiatives, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for women’s rights and tackling gender-based violence. Women Empowerment Humanitarian Aid The 10th anniversary of the Chibok Girls abduction was commemorated with the launch of a comprehensive report, highlighting the ongoing impact and reinforcing the call for justice and advocacy efforts. A courtesy and surveillance visit to the Makoko community offered deeper insights into their needs and opportunities, paving the way for more impactful humanitarian support initiatives. An in-depth exploration of the realities faced by individuals displaced by terrorism was undertaken during a visit to the Kuchingoro IDP camp, further solidifying the commitment to addressing displacement crises. Through the Humanitarian 4Rs initiative, welfare support was provided to the Treasures of Love orphanage home, reflecting a steadfast dedication to supporting and nurturing vulnerable children. Hope and relief were extended to victims of the Maiduguri flooding incident, offering solace and underscoring the Foundation’s unwavering dedication to disaster response and recovery efforts. Ayesha Islam (Harvard CID) strengthened our educational efforts by reviewing the Education Scholarship Programme for Chibok as part of the Education Impact Project. MMF Mentees Embark on Transformative Mentorship Journey We are thrilled to announce that Maha Fatima Omojo, founder of BeaDare Beads, and Uzoaga Grace, founder of Garnetmind Service Limited, have officially begun their one-year mentorship under the Cherie Blair Mentoring Women in Business Programme. After successfully completing the rigorous screening process and pre-matching training, these inspiring entrepreneurs have now been paired with mentors who will guide them through a year of transformative learning and development. This programme exemplifies MMF’s commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs across Africa, fostering their growth, and driving sustainable success. MMF Joins the Global Call to End Violence Against Women The Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) is proud to stand in solidarity with organisations and individuals worldwide for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This international campaign, which runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), amplifies the urgent need to eradicate violence in all forms against women and girls. At MMF, we are committed to fostering a safer society where every woman can thrive without fear of violence. As part of this year’s campaign, MMF will create awareness about the violation of women’s rights, promote conversations around the need for systemic change, and advocate for a future where all women can live free from violence. Celebrating 10 Years of HEAR WORD! Impact The Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) had the honour of attending the HEAR WORD! 10th Anniversary ImpactFest, a powerful three-day event organised by iOpenEye Africa to commemorate a decade of impactful advocacy against gender-based violence (GBV). The festival, attended by 3,000 participants, featured inspiring panels, a renowned stage play, spoken word performances, and solution-driven breakout sessions. It united voices committed to ending GBV and brought a renewed focus to creating a safer, more equal society. The HEAR WORD! stage play, based on real-life stories, offered a profound and eye-opening portrayal of the various forms GBV can take in daily life. The performances revealed how deeply ingrained patriarchy can blur perceptions, leading some to internalise abusive behaviors as normal. This normalisation often makes it difficult for victims to recognise abuse and seek help, underscoring the importance of awareness and education in addressing these issues. One of the play’s most impactful messages highlighted our shared responsibility in combating GBV. Staying silent or turning away from harm implicates us in the cycle of abuse, aligning us with perpetrators rather than victims. HEAR WORD!’s mission resonates deeply with MMF’s commitment to justice and equality, and we are proud to support this impactful cause. Change begins with each of us. By raising awareness and taking action within our communities, we can help build a society where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. MMF COMMUNICATIONS UNIT Women in Business Mentorship Programme MMF received amazing testimonials from its nominated mentees for the Cherie Blair Mentorship Programme, reflecting the impactful experiences of participants from both the November 2023 and May 2024 intakes. These testimonials highlight the value of mentorship in advancing their professional growth and contributing to their overall success.In addition, MMF participated in the partnership networking meeting sponsored by the Cherie Blair Foundation and partners across Africa, driven by insights from our Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team. This meeting focused on: Revamping the application and onboarding system. Modifying the two-way comprehensive feedback process. Enhancing communication strategies to foster sustainable relationships with mentees, mentors, and partners. These efforts underscore the programme’s commitment to empowering women by equipping them with the skills needed to enhance their financial capabilities and contribute to national economic growth. Internship Programme Highlights This year, we had the priviledge of working with three outstanding interns—two from Harvard’s Center for International Development (CID) and one from Babcock University—whose contributions have greatly advanced our mission at MMF. Community Engagements and Advocacy Visit to Treasure of Love Orphanage, Ketu The MMF team visited Treasures of Love Orphanage in Ketu to review the impact of its ongoing support. The orphanage provides specialized care for children with physical challenges and organ malfunctions. MMF’s contributions, including educational scholarships and medical assistance, were acknowledged with gratitude. The orphanage also highlighted its major challenge of paying an annual license fee of 700,000 Naira, hoping for government intervention. Despite this, the orphanage remains committed to supporting its children. Makoko Community Visit On August 28, 2024, MMF representatives visited the Makoko community to provide international interns, Disha and Ayesha, with firsthand experience of life in a grassroots community. The team, guided by a Teach for Nigeria Fellow, visited the Makoko Child Development Foundation. The team navigated Makoko by canoe, observing its water-based commerce and unique living conditions. At the Makoko Child Development Foundation, the head of the school discussed challenges such as funding for canoes and uniforms, and reliance on volunteer teachers. The local hospital, which treats common ailments, was also visited. It faces challenges due to a lack of essential equipment. Visit to CAIN Foundation, Alimosho MMF visited the CAIN Foundation in Alimosho to interact with students and learn more about its initiatives. The interns, Disha and Chizelum, led an engaging session with the students, sharing their educational journeys and offering advice. The foundation presented an overview of its mission, and the students expressed their curiosity by asking many insightful questions. The visit ended with a tour of the facilities and a recognition ceremony, where Disha was presented with a CAIN Foundation shirt. Tourist and Cultural Activities for Interns National Museum and Kokopelli Art Gallery Visit As part of their cultural immersion, MMF interns visited the National Museum Onikan and the Kokopelli Art Gallery. These visits provided them with an in-depth understanding of Nigeria’s rich history and vibrant art scene. The museum offered a historical perspective, while the gallery showcased contemporary African art, sparking deep conversations among the interns about Nigeria’s cultural heritage. Lekki Art and Craft Market and Joy of Africa Music Concert To further enrich their experience, the interns explored the Lekki Art and Craft Market, where they were fascinated by traditional crafts, including tie and dye, Ankara materials, and beaded jewellery. The day culminated in attending the Joy of Africa Music Concert at Freedom Park, where they enjoyed performances of traditional music from South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, etc. Special Visits Abuja Visitation MMF’s team embarked on a significant trip to Abuja to engage with key stakeholders and partners. This visit was aimed at strengthening relationships and exploring new avenues for collaboration. During their stay, the team visited the Neem Foundation, where they engaged in various departments and learned about its mental health support initiatives and work with terrorism victims. A visit to the Kuchingoro IDP camp highlighted the challenging conditions faced by displaced persons, emphasizing the need for ongoing support. The team also explored Abuja’s cultural heritage at Ushafa Pottery Village, with Disha having the opportunity to craft her earthen pot. They visited MMF’s sister company, Asset Management Group (AMG), and toured the MMF Research Center, learning about its development projects. Additionally, the team had a memorable lunch with Mrs. Ajoke Muhammed, MMF’s Vice Chairman, at her Palmetum. They also visited notable landmarks such as the National Mosque, Jabi Lake Mall, and Jabi Arts and Craft Village. This visit enriched the team’s understanding of community challenges and reinforced MMF’s commitment to empowering underserved communities. MMF Renovates Treasure of Love Orphanage Roof, Fulfilling a Long-standing Promise Roof Renovation at Treasure of Love Orphanage In line with our commitment to safeguarding and nurturing children’s development, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation has successfully renovated the inner roof of the Treasure of Love Orphanage Home. This significant upgrade fulfils our promise to provide a secure environment, a commitment we made when we began our humanitarian support for the orphanage 12 years ago. Completed earlier this month, the renovation offers the children a safer and more comfortable living space. This roofing project is just one facet of MMF’s continued support, including physiotherapy, amenities, and various child support initiatives. Prioritising Safety Amidst the Cholera Crisis In response to the recent cholera outbreak across Nigerian states, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation has taken proactive measures to advocate for best practices in health and hygiene. Through our social media platforms, we launched a comprehensive campaign featuring infographics and textual content to educate the public on preventing cholera. Our campaign highlighted crucial practices such as proper hygiene, safe water consumption, and effective preventive measures, ensuring the information was clear and accessible. Our goal was to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to protect themselves and their communities from the outbreak. Wishing Our Scholars a Joyous Holiday Season! The Murtala Muhammed Foundation extends its warmest holiday wishes to our scholars from Federal Government College Yola and Federal Government College Ganye. As they embark on their well-deserved break, we are pleased to report that all scholars, including those travelling from Federal Government College Maiduguri to Dapchi in Yobe State, have been safely transported to their destinations. We hope our scholars enjoy a restful and enjoyable holiday as they prepare for the upcoming term. ASA, renowned as Africa’s leading STEM academy for girls, is an advanced-level institution dedicated to young women with outstanding potential in mathematics and science. Founded by the African Gifted Foundation, ASA provides an exceptional boarding school experience where Blessed will complete globally respected Cambridge International A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics within just one academic year. Additionally, ASA offers cutting-edge programs in robotics and computer science, equipping students for future careers in engineering, science, and technology. Blessed has embarked on her exciting educational journey as of August 1st, 2024. Having completed all necessary checks and documentation, she has travelled from Nigeria to Ghana to start this new chapter in her academic life. Accelerating Sustainable Socioeconomic Growth for Internally Displaced People Hosted by The Amahoro Coalition in partnership with the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF), the High-level Stakeholder Forum was a significant step towards accelerating sustainable socioeconomic growth for internally displaced people (IDPs). This event brought together thought leaders, innovators, and key stakeholders to explore how the private sector can partner with IDPs to drive impactful change. The forum was filled with insightful discussions focused on investment and innovation, highlighting the vital role that the private sector can play in transforming the lives of IDPs. We had the honour of welcoming esteemed stakeholders from various organizations, including the Mastercard Foundation, Action Health Incorporated, The Teal Tree Company, GIZ, Chess In Slums Africa, Kidpreneur Africa, Blossomflow Empowerment Foundation, and many more. Each participant brought a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective on creating sustainable economic opportunities for IDPs. Key topics of discussion included: Investment Strategies: Exploring how targeted investments can spur economic growth and create job opportunities for IDPs. Innovative Solutions: Showcasing cutting-edge approaches to address the challenges faced by IDPs, from education to entrepreneurship. Collaborative Partnerships: Emphasizing the importance of multi-sector partnerships in driving systemic change and ensuring long-term impact. The forum also featured compelling presentations and discussions that underscored the need for inclusive and innovative approaches to support IDPs. Talented Scholars Shine at Damare Primary School Our scholars at Damare Primary School recently demonstrated their exceptional talents and dedication by participating in the Universal Basic Education Yola South competition. Exciting Partnership: 2024 CID Global Internship Program We are thrilled to announce that the Murtala Muhammed Foundation has been selected as a host organization for Harvard University’s prestigious Global Internship Program, facilitated by the Center for International Development (CID). This program offers undergraduate and graduate students at Harvard an incredible opportunity to engage in meaningful development work worldwide, expanding their horizons and gaining practical experience. Two talented Global Interns have been chosen to join us for an 8-week internship starting in June and August. On the 8th of May 2024, we held our first general meeting with the interns virtually. We are eager to welcome them and witness the innovative contributions they will bring to our development projects. This partnership exemplifies our commitment to fostering international collaboration and nurturing the next generation of development leaders. Fostering Connections for Sustainable Development The Christian Aid Africa private sector cocktail, part of the Christian Aid Week 2024 events, focused on the theme “Connecting the Private Sector and Charity Organizations for Sustainable Development.” Following the success of their donor cocktail in Abuja in 2023, this event aimed to strengthen collaborations between private sector entities and charity organizations to advance sustainable development initiatives. The Murtala Muhammed Foundation proudly attended this event, represented by key staff members. They engaged with key stakeholders, discussing potential partnerships and collaborations for sustainable development. STORY OF THE MONTH Celebrating Resilience and Academic Achievement This month, we celebrate the graduation of Mercy Paul and Patience Bulus, who graduated on the 13th and 19th, respectively. These remarkable young women are former victims of the 2014 Chibok abduction by Boko Haram militants. Despite the horrific experience, they have shown extraordinary resilience and hope, overcoming trauma and excelling academically. The Murtala Muhammed Foundation applauds their achievements and extends heartfelt gratitude to the Victim Support Fund for their unwavering partnership in sponsoring the girls. During the visit, the tertiary scholars, who are recipients of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation Scholarship Program, shared their own stories of facing challenges and overcoming them. They also took time to have personal chats with the young scholars, giving them advice on different career options, education paths, and how to develop useful skills. These conversations weren’t just informative; they also encouraged the students to get involved and ask questions, opening up new ideas about the many career paths available to them. Overall, the visit was a big success, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved. STORY OF THE MONTH MMF Reaffirms Commitment: 10 Years Since Chibok Girls’ Abduction In April, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) marked a significant milestone in our ongoing dedication to the Bring-Back-Our Girls mission. It has been a decade since the tragic abduction of the Chibok Girls, and MMF stood strong, honouring their memory through a series of impactful events. Our virtual gathering, a centrepiece of these events, featured a poignant report launch and a thought-provoking panel discussion with eight experts. The report shed light on the heartbreaking realities faced by the Chibok community: out of the 276 abducted girls, only 21 have returned, accompanied by 34 children. This report unveiled the grim truth of the sexual violence and forced marriages endured by these girls during their captivity, with 91 still missing. The coverage of our report by esteemed outlets like Tribune, PMMews, Independent and more amplified the urgency of our cause, exposing the devastating toll on families. Tragically, 48 parents of victims have passed away since the abduction, while survivors continue to battle profound psychological trauma, impacting their education and employment prospects. In response to these challenges, MMF’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Aisha Muhammad-Oyebode, presented ten vital recommendations during the report’s unveiling. These proposals implore the Nigerian government and the international community to prioritize the well-being and reintegration of survivors. In addition to our virtual gathering, MMF organized poignant events around the world to honour the resilience of the Chibok Girls. From “Remembering the Chibok Girls: A Decade of Resilience” at Brooklyn College, New York, in partnership with BBOG, to a Fireside Chat and Photo Exhibition at The Africa Center, MMF ensured that their story resonated globally. As we reflect on this sombre anniversary, MMF reaffirms our unwavering commitment to securing the release of those still in captivity and supporting their successful reintegration into society. MMF COMMUNICATIONS UNIT Celebrating International Women’s Day, the MMF Way March is a special month in the calendar devoted to celebrating women and advocating for gender equality. Specifically, March 8th marks International Women’s Day. Under the theme ‘Invest In Women: Accelerate Progress” ” the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, in its usual fashion, has aligned with the global community to celebrate women who, despite all odds, have continued to break the cycle. Underscoring our commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, MMF’s commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day was characterised by holding meaningful conversations centred around the topic “Empowering Women for Global Relevance; The Why and How”. As we continue to make tremendous contributions towards highlighting how investing in women across all spheres of life will accelerate progress not just for women but for society as a whole, MMF called on its community to promote women’s inclusion and empowerment by joining the “inspire inclusion pose” trend across social media platforms. Highlighting the event was the shared picture and video of MMF partners, staff, and volunteers striking the “inspire inclusion” pose. MMF continues to actively ‘work the walk’ of women’s empowerment as we record more success with the Women in Business mentorship program. Representatives from partner organisations such as the Ladies Helpline Initiatives and the Biodun and Ibikunle Foundation have shared impact stories based on the program participants’ feedback. One mentee expanded her business into multiple outlets, all thanks to the mentorship program. Another mentee now confidently creates comprehensive business plans, they remarked. Others highlighted the exceptional nature of the mentor-mentee relationship, emphasising the timely and meaningful conversations that foster self-improvement. As we persist in enhancing the capabilities of women entrepreneurs in Nigeria, efforts are underway to devise strategies to enhance women’s access to funding in vulnerable and marginalised communities. Our focus is especially on encouraging women to pursue studies in STEM fields. After receiving many applications from highly qualified students, we have closed the application process. Our team rigorously reviews each submission to identify the most deserving candidates. While our primary goal is to support women in STEM, we are committed to selecting the most exceptional individuals regardless of gender. Your support has been crucial in our mission to advocate for improved educational opportunities, and we deeply appreciate your continued involvement in this important journey. Honouring Our Chairman: Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s 87th Birthday. Celebrating Olusegun Obasanjo at 87 At MMF, birthdays hold more significance; they’re cherished moments, especially when honouring someone as remarkable as former President Olusegun Obasanjo. On March 5th, we celebrated our esteemed Chairman’s 87th birthday, recognising his unwavering dedication to fostering national peace, unity, and development. Having assumed the role of Chief of Staff, the second-in-command to General Murtala Muhammed, following the coup of July 29, 1975, Obasanjo ascended to the position of Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces after the assassination of our Patron, General Muhammed, in a coup on February 13, 1976. Unlike prevailing trends across Africa at the time, he remained steadfast in upholding the regime’s goals and objectives. During his three-year tenure as Head of State, Obasanjo wholeheartedly committed Nigeria to the anti-apartheid crusade, providing diplomatic, political, and military support to freedom movements in southern Africa, aligning with Nigeria’s independent foreign policy rooted in Africanization and non-alignment. Obasanjo’s steadfast commitment to addressing poverty, social instability, and marginalisation has profoundly impacted our nation’s progress. The Murtala Muhammed Foundation proudly stands alongside him, reaffirming our commitment to his noble ideals and expressing heartfelt gratitude for his tireless leadership as our Chairman. Nurturing Success: MMF Scholars Shine Bright at FGC Maiduguri During the Program Officer’s visit to the Federal Government College (FGC) Maiduguri, MMF vividly demonstrated its commitment to fostering academic excellence and personal development. Interacting directly with our scholars, Mr Maina, MMF’s Program Officer, addressed academic obstacles head-on, offering tailored mentorship to guide them toward success. By providing personalised attention and targeted support, particularly in challenging subjects like mathematics and physics, scholars felt empowered and motivated to overcome hurdles.
