Success Story- Hamman Hassan’s Transformation into a Graduate, Leader and Role Model In 2018, Hassan faced a devastating loss when his father, his academic sponsor, passed away. This loss not only left him emotionally shattered but also put his education at risk. He was on the verge of dropping out when the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) stepped in, just a month before he applied and passed the screening for MMF sponsorship. From 2018 to 2024, MMF supported Hassan’s education, paying his tuition fees annually and providing him with a semester-based allowance. This unwavering support allowed Hassan to focus on his academics while exploring his potential in other areas. Determined to uphold the trust MMF placed in him, Hassan avoided any misconduct and ensured he remained a worthy representative of the Foundation’s values. Hassan’s journey was not without setbacks. Initially admitted to study Mathematics and Statistics, he struggled academically, with a majority of his grades being F. Recognising the need for a fresh start, Hassan reapplied for admission, this time to study Guidance and Counselling. Starting anew from 100 level, he excelled academically and graduated with a second-class lower degree, proving that perseverance and the right environment can change the trajectory of one’s life. During his academic journey, Hassan developed an interest in politics, which he shared with the MMF Programme Coordinator during a Monitoring and Evaluation exercise. The coordinator encouraged him to prioritise his education while pursuing his political aspirations as a complementary goal. Inspired by this guidance, Hassan struck a balance between his academics and his political ambitions. Although his first attempt at contesting for a counsellor position in 2022 ended in the primaries, Hassan did not give up. With renewed determination, he contested again in 2024 and was successfully appointed as Special Adviser on Student Affairs for Ganye Local Government Area in Adamawa State on 31st October 2024. Beyond his academic and political pursuits, Hassan demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit. To support himself financially, he ventured into event planning, a business that has grown to employ four staff members. Now, in his role as Special Adviser on Student Affairs, Hassan is committed to using his position to inspire and guide students towards achieving their career aspirations. He encourages young people to remain steadfast, work hard, and never give up on their dreams, no matter the challenges they face. “I owe my success to God and the unwavering support of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation. Their faith in me kept me going, even during my toughest times. To future scholars, I say this: never give up. Challenges are stepping stones, and with determination and the right support, you can achieve greatness.” Hassan Hassan’s story exemplifies the profound impact MMF strives to create. Success Story- Abdullahi Abdullahi Muhammad – From Student to Entrepreneur, “Thanks to MMF’s Support and Guidance Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) is dedicated to empowering young individuals through education, skill development, and mentorship, ensuring they have the tools to build a better future for themselves and their communities. One such story is that of Abdullahi Abdullahi Muhammad, a scholarship recipient and geology student at the University of Maiduguri. Through our continuous Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) activities, Abdullahi’s journey transformed into a remarkable success story, illustrating the power of perseverance, guidance, and skill acquisition. Abdullahi’s path with MMF began as part of our prestigious scholarship program, which aims to provide not only financial support but also holistic development through various skill-building initiatives. MMF encourages all its beneficiaries to acquire skills that promote self-reliance and entrepreneurship, ensuring they don’t depend solely on external support or government aid. Through the Foundation’s Monitoring & Evaluation Initiative, Abdullahi participated in several activities such as online courses, tutorial videos, and hands-on learning experiences. Thanks to the insights gathered from MMF’s M&E efforts, the Foundation was able to tailor its support to meet Abdullahi’s individual needs, helping him stay focused on long-term success. Under the guidance and mentorship of MMF’s Programme Coordinator, Abdullahi embarked on a journey to combine his academic studies in geology with practical skills in borehole drilling. Over the course of three years, both before and after his Industrial Training Fund (ITF) experience, he diligently honed his expertise. The skill-building programs provided by MMF gave him the confidence to transform his knowledge into a viable career path. In a bold entrepreneurial move, Abdullahi established his own borehole drilling company, despite not yet having his own drilling tools or formal business registration. By collaborating with existing companies in the field, he began offering services, leveraging social media for marketing and networking. Today, his company is attracting clients who are eager to work with him, and he is already receiving inquiries for future projects. Abdullahi’s inspiring journey is a testament to the effectiveness of MMF’s scholarship program and M&E activities, which helped track his progress and provide ongoing support. He reflects on this by saying, “I just wanted MMF to know that its support and encouragement have not been in vain. I hope my journey will serve as an example to my colleagues and others who wish to create or pursue meaningful work.” MMF is immensely proud of Abdullahi’s achievements. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of combining academic knowledge with practical skills, and how structured, personalized support can lead to remarkable outcomes.
